Synopsis:
Ever since his mom left, Riley has been a mess. He feels nervous all the time. His heart pounds, his neck is tight, and he can't seem to turn off his brain. So his dad goes and signs him up for aikido.
But what if he gets hurt? The other boys are so rough and Wafaa, easily the most skilled student, won't even acknowledge him. What if he sucks?
Soon, however, Riley realizes he is becoming stronger. And his thoughts are not racing around so much. But Sensei says aikido is all about being prepared for the unexpected. Is Riley ready for what life has in store?

Praise from Reviewers

"An unexpected lesson that shows 'learning to fall' is an important step in developing resilience." Kirkus Review

"Overall, Eight Times Up is an interesting and engaging fast-paced read with strong, positive messages about self-control, self-improvement, and self-discipline." Recommended. Allison Giggey, CM: Canadian Review of Materials

"Readers will be inspired to research discrimination in sports based on religious practices. ...Ideal for martial arts fans looking for fiction that reflects their world, or else fictional guidance on relieving anxiety, Corr’s text could also serve as a launch pad for research on female Muslim fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad." Recommended. Laura Dooley-Taylor, Librarian, Illinois

"It excited me that an author wrote a book on mental health, acceptance, and mindfulness geared for younger readers! Where was this book when I was growing up!?...I have a teenage son who is going through the same issue with anxiety and has a heart bigger than he comprehends - I cannot wait to share this with him!" LibraryThing.com

"This book is so good. I wish I had read more books like this when I was still at the middle grade reading level. ...I would highly suggest this even if you, like me, are not still in the 8-12 age range of reading levels!" Goodreads.com
